DIY Vintage Map Hanger

Slowly but surely, I’m getting the nursery ready. I actually thought I would be done by now but it’s taking a little longer than expected. Most good things do!

Here’s my inspiration board for the room in case you missed it. One of the things I worked on recently was hanging the vintage map I found a few months ago at an awesome local vintage sale. Now I just needed to figure out how to hang it!

This was actually a very easy and quick project and you could use it to hang any item in your home that you don’t want to frame. It’s especially useful for large items that would cost a fortune to have custom framed. This project cost about $10 in supplies at most.

I had a piece of scrap plywood in the garage that my husband cut into 4 narrow planks. He’s an engineer so he really, really likes to make precise measurements!

The planks he cut out ended up measuring 3 1/4 inches wide. And they are just a tad longer than the map itself. But depending on the size of what you are hanging you could make these thicker or more narrow.

I stained the boards using Minwax Dark Walnut Stain. I opted not to add any top coat to the planks. They didn’t need to be perfect, in fact more rustic was better.

At this point you want to attach your boards together with your map or picture sandwiched in between. You can use some screws on either end of the wood but we opted to glue the two pieces of wood together. The reason: we didn’t have the right size screws on hand. Rather than try to get to the hardware store we just used the wood glue we did have on hand.

Have you been wondering what to do with that exercise equipment that is collecting dust in your house? You could of course use clamps or rocks or your children to hold the pieces of wood together while the glue dries. But we opted for dumbbells. Again, because they were right there and the kids were not.

I used my staple gun to attach sisal rope to both ends of the planks. And that’s it. Super easy and super inexpensive.
