One of the things I love most about living in California is our indoor/outdoor lifestyle. It is rare that our sliding glass door at the back of the house isn’t open to let the breeze and sunshine in. Winter is no exception. If you are in the Polar Vortex areas of our country you might want to close your ears or cover your eyes or for heavens sake just skip this part. It is 75 and sunny here today! I didn’t want anyone to get too jealous. But don’t think I have gone soft in my time here in the Bay Area. I still remember icy roads, snow days and gray skies from my former Midwest life. (Ok, maybe I have weakened a bit, I do already think 60 is kind of chilly!)

Regardless of where you live, you can always bring a little outdoors in. Make your home feel like a garden, even if there is nothin’ growing outside with some DIY Moss Covered Garden Balls.

Here is what you will need:

Styrofoam balls from the craft store

Sheet Moss (I got mine at Joann’s)

Hot Glue

Scissors

Twine (I used Hemp twine that I purchased at Walmart in the craft section)

The first thing you will do to make your garden ball is cut some of the sheet moss. I just cut my first piece in a square. I knew it wouldn’t cover the whole thing and I would have to squish it and overlap it but that is ok. A real stone covered with moss would not be perfectly even and neither will this one.

Then add some hot glue to your styrofoam ball. Careful to not let it get too hot, it will melt the ball a bit and it will kind of seep through the moss so you don’t want to burn your fingers.

Just start pressing the moss onto the garden ball. Fold it and overlap it where needed and keep gluing.

When you have all the moss on, go ahead and shape it with your hands pressing the moss.

Next secure an end of your string or twine with a little hot glue and start wrapping. It doesn’t matter what direction. You just want it to be really organic. (Organic, isn’t that a hippie Cali thing to say?!)

And that’s it.

I made a whole bunch in different sizes. You can arrange them in a jar or bowl. I replaced the glitter pinecones from Christmas I had on my table centerpiece and the candles on my candlesticks with my new moss covered garden balls.

I made enough to add to my wire tiered basket as well.
